Sleeping problems

Sleeping Problems

Sleeping problems or sleep disturbance is defined as a difficulty falling or staying asleep (Nunes ML. and Cavalcante V 2005). Nocturnal wakefulness is normal during early infancy and usually decreases substantially over the first few months of life (Kang & Kim 2021).

Many babies will have difficulty falling or staying asleep during their first year of life, and maybe even beyond.

Sleeping Problems & CMPA

What causes sleeping problems in infants?

Sleeping problems or sleep disturbance is defined as a difficulty falling or staying asleep (Nunes ML. and Cavalcante V 2005). Nocturnal wakefulness is normal during early infancy and usually decreases substantially over the first few months of life (Kang & Kim 2021). Could it be a symptom of Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy?

When no evident cause for sleeping problems can be found in an infant, the possibility of a CMPA should be given serious consideration (Kahn et al Sleep and health risks; Kahn et al 1985).

However, when considering the diagnosis of CMPA, it’s important to consider that the majority of infants with CMPA have at least two symptoms affecting at least two different organ systems (Lifschitz C. and Szajewska H 2015; Høst  & Halken 1990; Høst  et al 1994).

Therefore, it is important to consider the individual child as well as the magnitude of their symptoms.  This can be achieved using an awareness tool such as the Cow’s Milk Related Symptom Score (CoMiSS®) which will help you determine if CMPA might be indicated (Vandenplas et al 2015;Vandenplas et al 2022).
